Plastic Bottle Capability Test Withstand Air Pressure

In the previous article titled Utilizing Plastic Bottles To Make Airsoft Gun from PVC we have written a little about the process of making plastic bottle beverages that generally use blow molding techniques. Basically, this technique is done by 'blowing' the bottle material in the form of preform and assisted with a high enough temperature so that the plastic is relatively soft.
Because the plastic bottle is made using high pressure and temperature, it is logic after being also able to withstand the air pressure when used to make the airsoft gun. To answer the allegations we do a simple test by pumping air into sprite drinking plastic bottles. The drink is not a type of carbonation, so bottles are not specially designed to withstand the gas pressure from the contents of the bottle.

The selection of this bottle as a test material is not based on special consideration, but rather based on the availability of materials and size that is not too big if later really used to make the airsoft gun project.

Simple steps that we do to test as follows:
Prepare a bottle of drink, complete with lid.
Prepare the nipple tire. Can utilize used inner tube from bicycle, motorcycle or car.
Pull a bottle cap the size of a bike nipple, will be more neat if using a drill.
Insert the nipple into the prepared hole, add liquid glue or glue gun if necessary.
Pair the cap to the bottle, apply pressure using hand pump or compressor.
At high enough pressure, the bottle will begin to deform or become more 'filled' or inflated. Please be careful because excessive pressure can make a bottle erupt like a green balloon :-)
Measure bottle pressure.
To know the leak can be done by soaking in water.
The bottle can be stored for several days to see if it becomes deflated indicating a leak.
Measure the bottle pressure again.
From the simple experimental step above, we noted that the plastic bottles we tested were able to withstand a pressure of 45 psi. We stopped at that number because until then it was still 'dark' about the ability of the bottle to withstand the pressure. We did not want to know more about the pressure of the bottle at that time. Knowing the maximum capability of the bottle to withstand the air pressure in our opinion is important enough to establish a safe air pressure number that can be used.

Test, plastic bottles, beverage packaging, air pressure
This plastic sprite drink bottle is able to withstand 45 psi pressure and has started deformation (change shape) becomes more bloated :-)

We conclude that the bottle of this type of drink can be used as water chamber in our PVC airsoft gun project. Please note that this test step does not involve sufficient number of samples so that the capability of each bottle may be different. The required activity for performing this test is also at risk as it may involve sharp tools and pressurized air. Always be careful, use protective equipment and risk also be your own responsibility.
